DIY Teeth Whitening: Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda paste

Want a white smile but can’t bear to pay the extortionate price for having your teeth professionally whitened? Or have you just got a few bothersome stains from your tea and coffee that you would like to shift? Either way, there is a way to get rid of these troublesome stains and whiten your teeth up nicely for that photo ready smile. This method is simple and easy, and its super cheap too. You only have to do it a few times to get the results you are looking for, and it works!

Hydrogen Peroxide and baking soda; this combination is a failsafe. Both will whiten your teeth and remove stains on their own, so combining them together has to be a winner, right? Let’s take a quick look at why they work before we get started.

Hydrogen Peroxide essentially bleaches your teeth. It can easily break down the molecules which are causing stains and discolouration on your teeth. Using too much of it can cause damage to your teeth however, so it is suggested that you limit the use of this.

Baking soda is abrasive and helps to remove stains and discolouration on your teeth, caused by things like coffee and tea. If you brush your teeth with baking soda, it acts against the stains and your teeth will appear whiter as the stain is removed. You might have seen people using it to brighten up white clothes? Well, it’s the same kind of thing.

What you need:
⦁    Baking soda
⦁    3% Hydrogen Peroxide
⦁    Toothbrush
⦁    Small pot

In a small pot, mix together a teaspoon of baking powder along with a few drops of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. This should form a thick paste which is about the consistency of toothpaste. If the mixture hasn’t formed into a paste, add another drop of Hydrogen Peroxide, but take care not to add to much.

Apply the paste to your toothbrush, about the same amount as if you were applying toothpaste. Brush your teeth thoroughly, concentrating on the areas that are stained or discoloured.

Rinse your mouth out and take a look at those pearly whites! It shouldn’t take long for you to see a different – it might even be immediately noticeable.

You use this method each day for about 5 days, but then break for 6 months so as to not damage your teeth. Alternatively, you could use this method every few weeks for a less intense treatment.
